Sectional garage doors with wood ovelays have been manufactured for more than 30 years. Typically, 1 X 6 cedar boards have been applied over a wooden or flush door frame. More recently manufacturers hsve applied the boards to the face of an open-faced steel door, resulting in a product that is iften more than three inches in thickness and weighing more than 500 lbs. for a two car garage door, thus comprimising the structural integrity of the steel pan door.

At 1st United Door, we have developed a patent-pending process and design that aliminates these problems. We re-saw Western Red Cedar or Inland Red Cedar wood to 3/8 inches thick, literally cutting the weight of the door in half. With the reduced board thickness, we are in a better position to control the movement of the board , thus, minimizing the cupping and crowning seen in thicker 3/4 inch boards. THe boards are then laminated to the steel door with an epoxy-based cement and pinned with 18 ga. brads. Knot and brad holes are filled and the entire door is sanded smooth with 150-grit sanding paper. Accent boards 3/4 inches thick can be applied smooth ir riugh-sawn side face up in various designs. We apply all of the 3/8 inch boards to a steel sadwich door consostong of two sheets of 26 ga. steel laminated to a 3/4 inch rigid polystyrene insulation that has the structural integrity to carry the additional weight with a rigid framework. Section joins are cut at a 15-degree angle and the entire door is sealed with an apoxy sealer.

The Woodie Plank™ can be customized to virtually any design. The design of the door can be further enhanced woth a variety of decorative hardware options. In addition, optional glass designs can be added to intesify the overall appearance of the door.
